H. eBOOK TO BECOME A FILM. The Stephen King ghost story novella Riding
the Bullet, which was released as an e-book three years ago, is being
turned into a feature film.
I. AOL, MICROSOFT UNLEASH LAWYERS ON SPAMMERS. America Online and Microsoft
are sending lawyers after spammers, with AOL seeking tough anti-spam legislation
and Microsoft filing a lawsuit against unnamed defendants. See

J. PMA ESTABLISHES BOOK DONATION PROJECT. The Publishers Marketing Association
plans to collect and distribute 1,000,000 remainder and overstock books
to community literacy programs nationwide.
PMA will establish a web page on which you can list your available titles.
Qualified not-for-profits, who have signed an agreement with PMA that
controls donation of the books exclusively to literacy programs, will
"shop" on the web page. When they make a selection, participating
publishers will receive an "order" for carton quantities (to
make it easy) and will be reimbursed for all freight costs (The exact
mechanism is still to be worked out.) Already Prison administrators, Rotary
clubs, Native American Nations and regional literacy groups have enthusiastically
asked to participate.
Right now PMA need answers to two quick questions.
1. Approximately how many return/overstock units do you have sitting
around that you would be willing to contribute to this project?
2. Approximately how many different titles are included in this total?

the attention of the public. Marketing experts all agree that you must
test your headline to increase its pulling power. You can test up to 10
headlines at a time and have the focus group vote on which ones they feel
are more effectively written.

D. IF YOUR SPELLING-CHECKER FAILS TO FLAG A MISSPELLED WORD, you may
have accidentally added it to your Custom Dictionary. To remove (or add)
words, go to Tools\Options\ Spelling & Grammar\Custom Dictionaries.

trafficked months are June, July and December according to the Direct

G. EMAIL ADDRESSES CHANGE AT THE RATE OF 31% ANNUALLY according to a
study by NFO Worldgroup. Reasons for changing addresses were switching
ISPs, leaving jobs and changing to avoid spam. On the average people register
their email addresses with 12 web sites and newsletters; they notify just
six when they change their address. Twenty-two percent do not notify anyone
of a change.

USE HUMOR
Humor, like a story, makes your point and makes it memorable.
Occasional humor can make your writing more fun to read, but humor is
one of the most difficult writing forms to master.
Harold Stephens made a jeep trip across Russia and ended up in jail;
Milt Machlin, editor of Argosy magazine, wanted the story. When Machlin
rejected the submission as “too heavy,” Stephens explained
that the experience “wasn’t much fun.”
Machlin said, “Tell me about it.” Stephens described the
arrest. He was told to strip down to his drawers. A woman interpreter
was present when they told him to take off the underwear too. Stephens
objected and she said, “Never mind, I’m married.”
Machlin smiled and said “Write it up.” Stephens learned to
laugh at himself and Machlin bought a dozen articles from him after that.
Now Stephens uses humor in his books.

Humor has two basic parts, the set-up and the punch line. In a book,
your text is the set-up. All you have to do is see the humor in it. Humor
is more effective when the punch line is a complete surprise; try to catch
your reader off guard.

B. BEWARE THE C-NILE VIRUS. It seems that there is a new virus out the
called c-nile virus that even the most advanced programs from Norton or
McAfee cannot take care of, so be warned, it appears to
mostly effect those of us who were born before 1950.
Symptoms of virus:
1. Causes you to send same e-mail twice.
2. Causes you to send blank e-mail.
3. Causes you to send to the wrong person.
4. Causes you to send back to person who sent it to you.
5. Causes you to forget to attach the attachment.
6. Causes you to hit "send" before you've finished your message.
